Avocet silkscreen print
A three colour silkscreen print of a graceful Avocet wading in the shallows. We recently saw some of these beautiful birds close-up at Slimbridge wetland centre -(https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/slimbridge) a fantastic place to visit - and I was wonderstruck by how delicate and elegant they are. They're such beautiful birds.
Its an Avocet on the RSPB's emblem, because it represents a great bird conservation success story: They were extinct in the UK in the 19th century but when beaches in East Anglia were closed and flooded as a defence against invasion in the second world war, the Avocets were able to recolonise them :) So since the 1940s they have increased their numbers and are a protected species. They're still on the Amber list for conservation status, but how wonderful that they're back on our wetlands.
This Avocet is hand screenprinted in three colours on Southbank paper in an edition of 36, each one signed and hand numbered, paper size; 25x35cm approx, image size; 13x26cm approx
